The 10th Annual Whitaker Woods Snowshoe Scramble was held on Saturday, January 18th, 2020.
Based on the questionable conditions of 50 degrees, rain and little to no coverage on the trails just days before the event, we were excited to have fifty-four racers complete the 4.1 mile course. In just a couple of days, we received 14+" of new snow and the temps dropped to single digits. The weather was sunny, no wind with a temperature of three degrees at race start. It was a miracle!!

This event attracted racers from six states including a group of eight from Paul Smith College in the Adirondacks who are training for the DION Snowshoe National Championships coming up at the end of February. There were many familiar faces along with a number of entrants that were trying this exciting activity for the very first time. They were all excited about the conditions and the course which offers some great views of snow-covered Mt. Washington.

John Carton of Newmarket, NH, a familiar face at this event, was first to finish in 30:00.9 minutes.
Haley Heinrich of Newbury, NH was the first woman to cross the line and the fourth overall with a time of 32:42.4 minutes.

This is a very unique snowshoe race that is made possible by a small group of amazing volunteers including Kevin Tilton as Race Director; Cort Hansen with course layout and timing, Seth Burnell at the laptop for the official timing, Leslie O'Dell taking care of race day registration with the help of first-time volunteer Wendy Chaney, Peter Crane who was in charge of DION snowshoe rentals, and Jess Tilton as the phenomenal baker of the home baked treats for age group awards!

Everyone got their popsicle stick for their number, their NH made buff provided by Ragged Mountain Equipment and post-race coffee, tea, bananas, bagels and broccoli cheddar soup provided by our local Big Dave's Bagels and Deli, rated NH's #1 Bagel Shop by the viewers of WMUR!

We have these businesses to thank for their donations of prizes and gift certificates of nearly $700 for the 10th Annual event held January 18, 2020 ...

Based on the smiles and rave reviews at the finish line, we expect to see many of these new faces again next year along with the folks that have supported this fundraiser with their participation many times in the last ten years. Come join us!
